Bolsonaro’s silence leads Bolsonaro supporters to support Marçal – 10/01/2024 – Panel

Bolsonaro deputies who were previously afraid to express support for Pablo Marçal (PRTB) in the dispute for Mayor of São Paulo began to openly declare that they are on the side of the influencer and not the mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), for whom Jair Bolsonaro (PL) does campaign.

This Tuesday (1st), Marco Feliciano (PL-SP) declared support for Marçal. Before him, Carla Zambelli (PL-SP), Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) and Zé Trovão (PL-SC) had already done the same.

In addition to being the former president’s party, the PL nominated Nunes’ vice-president, Coronel Mello Araújo, and is the main donor to the mayor’s campaign, with R$17 million, ahead of the MDB itself, which donated R$15 million .

According to the Panel, other parliamentarians and candidates are expected to join the movement in the coming days.

In a reserved capacity, one of them tells the column that the first to declare support for Marçal ran the risk of buying enmity with Bolsonaro.

However, the former president never sought out deputies to discourage them nor signaled any type of discomfort or retaliation, and so the movement gained volume. Therefore, they consider that Bolsonaro gave a silent endorsement — that is, according to this interpretation, even if he supports Nunes at the request of the PL, he will not break ties with anyone who prefers to accompany Marçal.

Bolsonaro has had an oscillating participation in the emedebista campaign. In mid-August, the former president called Marçal intelligent and said that Nunes was not his dream candidate. In the following weeks, he recorded videos asking for votes for the mayor and criticizing the influencer.

Amid this back and forth, Bolsonaro practically did not participate in public events with Nunes, a task that was taken over by governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos-SP), who became the mayor’s main electoral campaigner.
