Less than 72 hours after the government’s turn, the Revenue leadership received details of how the Bolsonarist machine had operated within the body in previous years. At a meeting on January 3, Corregidor João José Tafner reported that, during Jair Bolsonaro’s administration, he was pressured to bury investigations into illegal access to tax data by the president’s opponents.
The wanton, as revealed by the Sheet, hit former ally Paulo Marinho, former minister Gustavo Bebianno and the coordinator of investigations into cracks in the offices of the Bolsonaro clan. The accesses took place in 2019, but a structure set up by the government acted to cover up crimes committed in the name of the president’s interests.
Bolsonaro benefited from a network that was silent in the face of moves to interfere politically in sensitive bodies. The then-president’s group placed allies willing to do the dirty work in key positions, exerted pressure on other civil servants, dynamited transparency mechanisms and domesticated institutions of control.
The head of the Revenue who spied on Bolsonaro’s opponents participated in secret meetings inside the Planalto Palace, at the time of illegal access to that information. The body’s inspector said he had been instructed by two chiefs to shelve investigations into the case.
Other stories that were hidden under the rug saw the light of day with the change of command in Planalto. Bolsonaro and allies operated within the Revenue to get their hands on the Saudi jewels for 14 months, before the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo reported the case. At Abin, a secret tool allowed the government to monitor the location of up to 10,000 cell phones for almost two and a half years, as shown by O Globo.
Bolsonaro managed to prevent these bombs from exploding while he was in power, but he also left traces along the way. Without a shock troop to shield the former president, more dirt can appear.
