Bauru, a traditional snack from São Paulo and one of the most consumed in Brazil, is among the 50 best sandwiches in the world. The ranking is from TasteAtlas, a website specializing in gastronomy. The Brazilian preparation was in front of other well-known ones, such as Avocado Toast, from the United States, which was in 44th place.

At the top of the list, Tombik from Turkey, a variety of Kebab, which takes shredded meat, in a so-called pide ekmek, with a flattened shape. And in second place, the Butifarra, from Peru, made with crispy white bread (rosette) stuffed with jamón del country (spicy ham infused with garlic), salsa criolla, lettuce, radish and pepper.

The Bauru

The history of Bauru begins in 1934, when a group of students from the Faculty of Law of Largo de São Francisco, in São Paulo, decided to create a new sandwich. The name “Bauru” was chosen in honor of the city of Bauru, in the interior of the state, where one of the students was born.

The original recipe is made with French bread, roast beef, melted cheese, tomato and pickled cucumber. You can also use boiled egg and oregano, but there are many variations available.

TasteAtlas ranked Bauru as one of the best foods in the world due to its unique combination of flavors and textures. The roast beef is tender and juicy, the melted cheese is creamy and salty, and the pickled tomatoes and cucumbers add a refreshing tartness. All of this is complemented by crispy French bread.
