Atlético-MG overturns Vasco and takes the lead in the semi-final of the Copa do Brasil – 10/02/2024 – Sport
Atlético Mineiro managed to turn things around this Wednesday (2) against Vasco and came out ahead in the first clash in the semifinals of the Copa do Brasil. In Belo Horizonte, the home team scored 2-1.
All the goals came in the first half. Philipe Coutinho opened the scoring for the Vasco team, after 14 minutes, while Guilherme Arana, at 38, and Paulinho, at 44, scored for the Minas Gerais team.
The return match will be on Saturday (19), at 6:30 pm, in São Januário, where the visitors will have the advantage of playing for a draw to advance to the knockout stage.
The second match was initially scheduled for the 16th, but was changed after a request from the Minas Gerais team — in the other semi-final, the return game between Corinthians and Flamengo, at Neo Química Arena, was also postponed after a request from the red-black team.
The request from the two clubs came due to the FIFA Data, between October 7th and 15th, and the absences of the teams with the call-up of players for the South American teams.
The two changes caused outrage among the directors of Corinthians and Vasco, who publicly took a stance against the decisions taken by the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation).
After the publication of the decision, on Saturday (28), the two clubs filed lawsuits with the STJD (Superior Court of Sports Justice) questioning the postponement of the matches and asking for a return to the original dates.
Despite the criticism, the entity, to date, has maintained the changes as requested by Atlético Mineiro and Flamengo.
