Amazonians will give gifts, but with lower values, says CDL about Valentine’s Day

Manaus (AM) – Couples in love are already preparing to spend next Monday (12) celebrating Valentine’s Day. Eve of the day of Saint Anthony, also known as the matchmaker saint. In Manaus, entrepreneurs are confident for the third most important commercial date of the year and are taking advantage of the period to boost products and services, which were harmed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to a survey carried out by the Chamber of Shopkeepers of Manaus (CDL Manaus), Valentine’s Day will have a significant impact on local trade, moving more than R$ 62 million. The expectation is for a 2.9% growth in sales compared to the same period in 2022, with an expense amount of approximately R$ 130.

Even if this year’s billing expectation is high, there are still concerns about the sector, due to the number of unemployed people and the lower income in Brazilian households.

“Normally, seasonal dates provide an expectation of increased sales, logically in revenue and increased employment. This year, however, two factors may hinder this euphoria. Firstly, our country is experiencing an increase in unemployment, as a result, income is lower and so are expectations of expenses. Secondly, due to the political problems and the economy we are living in, family indebtedness is one of the highest in recent times, inhibiting the prospect of new purchases”,

points out the economist Orígenes Martins Júnior.

A survey by CDL Manaus showed that most Manauaras consider giving gifts to their companions, be it a date, wife, girlfriend, fiancée, or even other people. In numbers, the survey pointed out that 52% of the interviewees intend to give a gift to their spouse, 36% their boyfriend/girlfriend, 36% their boyfriend/girlfriend, 3% their fiancé/girlfriend, and 3% mentioned other people.

Among the most sought after items for gifting, respondents intend to give perfumery items to their loved ones, good occupies the top of the list of priority gifts, with 20%. Clothing (16%), footwear (14%), lunch/dinner (12%), jewelery/watches (7%), sporting goods, chocolate, flowers/bouquet and beauty products also appear as an option ( 4%), books, electronics, smartphones and handbags (3%), lingerie (1%), and others (1%). There is still 1% of undecided people who don’t know what to buy.

Businesses struggle to gain space in the services offered to consumers. Not everyone has the financial conditions to buy expensive items, especially with the current economic situation in the country. The CDL pointed out that 41% of respondents intend to spend between R$51 and R$100; 31% plan to spend between R$101 and R$200; 16% intend to spend between R$201 and R$500; 6% are not sure; 5% plan to spend R$50; and 1% intend to spend between R$501 and R$999.

Economist Ailson Rezende maintains that the market reheated after the pandemic, but other situations arose, compromising consumer spending in relation to gift values.

′′ After the pandemic, with strong immunization and the end of social isolation, the market reheated, but there was a flattening of wages, reducing the population’s ability to pay. This reason leads people who intend to give gifts to rethink the items and their prices. Giving gifts is good for those who donate and promotes happiness for those who receive, doing good for both people”, described Rezende.

Despite not being able to spend a lot, the couple Lorena Teixeira and João Silva did not want to let the date go unnoticed and chose to present their partner with souvenirs, without much financial cost. Newly employed, the two preferred to settle debts and save money to build the dream house.

”We’re going to give up celebrating the way we wanted because we have other priorities at the moment, but if we have better conditions next year, we want to go out, go out to dinner, things like that”,

told Lorraine.

Payment methods

Another important point of the CDL’s research is the consumer’s choice of payment method. The material shows that the installment credit card is the most chosen option, with 23% preference. Then appear cash and debit card, both with (22%), Pix (20%), cash payment on credit card and installments on the store card each with (5%) and store crediário (3% ).

According to experts, it is necessary to be very careful when choosing the payment method, since if the person is not financially organized, the invoice can become a long-term problem.

”The best form of payment is in cash, where the buyer can negotiate a better discount than the one in the shop window. If it is not possible to pay in cash, a credit card is a great option, but it takes organization and discipline so that the debt does not turn into a snowball and turn the dream into a nightmare”,

argues Ailson Rezende.

Economist Orígenes Martins agrees that the credit card can be harmful, and is currently considered a villain for the Brazilian population. “Some credit cards charge almost 400% interest a year and the person makes the purchase without paying attention to this rate, becoming in default in most cases”, he said.

Despite all caveats, Amazonian couples will still celebrate the date, each in their own way. With an increase in sales expectations compared to the previous year, retailers await with great enthusiasm the movement of Amazonian consumers in the various services offered to the population.
