Água Santa coach is inspired by the Argentines – 01/04/2023 – Sport

In February 2020, an interview by Thiago Carpini at Brinco de Ouro had a greater impact than what usually happens with statements by Guarani coaches.

At the time commander of the Campinas team, he criticized the new generation of players and the base categories of national football. Generally speaking, he said there was little commitment from the younger generations, which was why he had just demoted a player from the professional squad to the under-20s.

Three years later, the problem that the technician classified as “generational” still bothers him. At 38, the young coach is the result of a vintage that, according to him, should be inspired by the example of the Argentines, current world champions.

“What I like about Argentine football is the competitiveness, how they face the game. That delights me. Brazilian football needs to rescue that”, he tells the Sheet. “Our technical capacity is indisputable, but our competitiveness, our desire to win, we lost a little over time.”

Ahead of Água Santa since May last year, he sought to imprint that mark on the squad of the Diadema team during this year’s Paulista Championship.

His method was to pay more attention to the relationship with athletes, group management and training. For him, “everyday is more important than the game”, an opinion formed based on reading books written by a Spaniard, Pep Guardiola, of whom he is a fan. “That way he brings out the best in athletes.”

With the references of the Manchester City coach, the São Paulo born in Valinhos achieved a surprising result. He took a team that until 2011 played in amateur football to the State final, eliminating São Paulo and Red Bull Bragantino in the playoffs.

In the decision, he will have another rival of the Brazilian football elite ahead of him, Palmeiras, current state and national champions.

“Why not allow us to dream a little more? The favoritism is not ours, we have no responsibility to be champions. But of course we will try to play a great game, worthy of a final”, he says.

The first leg will be this Sunday (2), at Arena Barueri, at 4 pm. The return match will be on the 9th, at the same time, at Allianz Parque. The duels will be broadcast by Record, YouTube, HBO Max, Paulistão Play and Premiere – this is the only phase defined in two clashes.

The spotlight changed the routine of Carpini and Água Santa. Since the victory over São Paulo on penalties (6-5), with a goalless draw in regular time, requests for interviews have accumulated.

“I think it’s been an average of three a day,” he says. “It’s a historic moment for the club, and we have to enjoy it,” she says.

The performance in the competition has already earned the coach a contract renewal. The bond, which lasted until the end of the tournament, was extended until December 2024. The period covers the dispute in Série D of the Brazilian Championship next year, for which the association was classified.

In 2023, after Paulista ended, Água Santa will no longer play, which is why it must dispose of almost the entire finalist squad.

During the club’s downtime, Carpini will also be out. He has already scheduled a trip to Europe, where he will do internships at clubs in Germany and England, including Manchester City, where he will have contact with Guardiola.

“I want to be there during a period with Champions matches to follow not only the matches but also the training sessions in the week leading up to those matches”, says the professional, who intends to obtain a coaching license from Uefa (Union of European Football Federations).

Before, he will make a stopover in Argentina. There, in addition to completing his license from the AFA (Argentine Football Association), the coach will spend a period at River Plate.

For him, the training of Argentine technicians is at a higher level than that of Brazilians.

“Proof of this is that Argentine football is much closer to European football,” he says. “I see foreign coaches occupying space in our football, and we also need to prepare ourselves to occupy spaces abroad.”

For him, the Argentines find it easier to consolidate in Europe. “Brazilian football exports a lot, many players are successful, but many crash there and fail to establish themselves.”

He himself did not have such an opportunity. As an athlete, he had little prominence, but accumulated passages through important Brazilian clubs, such as Guarani, Atlético Mineiro and Bahia. He stopped playing in May 2017, aged 33, forced by successive injuries.

In the same year, he accepted an invitation from coach Evaristo Piza to be an assistant at XV de Piracicaba and began his career on the edge of the pitch, a desire that he already cultivated as an athlete. Before hanging up his boots, he started the Physical Education course.

In the second half of that year, former midfielder Fumagalli, at the time Guarani’s soccer superintendent, took Carpini to the Campinas team, also as an assistant. Just 40 days later, Roberto Fonseca was sacked midway through his Série B campaign, and the newcomer was promoted to coach.

With the rookie in charge, Guarani managed to escape relegation to Serie C. The following year, he had a good campaign in the State. Although the team did not advance to the knockout stage, their football was recognized by Tite, still coach of the Brazilian national team. For him, Carpini was one of the great revelations of that year.

After managing the Campinas team, he started a journey through the state of São Paulo and had jobs in Oeste, Inter de Limeira, Santo André and Ferroviária until arriving at Água Santa, with which he now has the chance to win his first title as technician.
