Acácio’s project foresees employee leave to monitor the treatment of a spouse with cancer – Diário do Amapá
Bill authored by federal deputy Acácio Favacho (MDB-AP) is being processed in the Chamber of Deputies, which allows employees to be absent from work, without salary deduction, to accompany their spouse or partner during the diagnosis and cancer treatment phase , on the days of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The proposal changes the Consolidation of Labor Laws (CLT) and is under analysis.
Acácio Favacho recalls that the Statute of Persons with Cancer already lists fundamental rights of the person with the disease, including the presence of a companion, preferably a family member of the patient, during care and the period of treatment and reception.
Favacho considers it fair to adapt the CLT to guarantee this right. Today, the law provides for employees to be away for three days each year to undergo preventive cancer exams, but not to accompany their spouse or partner in treatment for the disease.
“Cancer treatment is complex and painful for the patient and their families. Therefore, we understand that the spouse or partner has a fundamental role, as they will be the person who will be at all stages, from diagnosis to the completion of treatment”says Favacho.
Next steps
The project is conclusive and will be analyzed by the Labor, Constitution and Justice and Citizenship committees. To become law, the proposal must be approved by deputies and senators.
